Scientific expertise

Our scientific approach to selection, plant breeding and diversity.

Our scientific expertise brings together complementary skills: deep knowledge of viticulture and grape varieties, now reinforced by genetics.

Introduction

Selection, the Centre’s long-standing and core mission, has continued since the 1960s with the same aim: to meet the needs of winegrowers and nurseries.

This work continues thanks to an extensive network of field technicians. They know their vineyards well and work directly with winegrowers. Their ongoing fieldwork aims to achieve the broadest possible representation of intra-varietal diversity.

Over time, the criteria have been refined to include organoleptic characteristics, assessed through numerous annual experimental vinifications.

Through varietal selection and breeding, we bring together expertise in agronomy, oenology, sensory analysis, physiology, plant pathology and genetics.

One strength of this collective lies in its scientific diversity, which enables it to produce high-quality plant material.

Another strength lies in the strict protocols applied to varieties under evaluation, both in the vineyard and in the winery.

Research & Development

Today, in response to the challenges surrounding plant material, no avenue is overlooked. Clonal selection continues to ensure the broadest possible representation of grape variety diversity, while work also focuses on forgotten and Mediterranean varieties.

At the same time, foreign rootstocks are being evaluated to identify material better suited to rapidly changing climatic conditions.

In the medium term, rootstocks resistant to phylloxera and to the nematodes that transmit grapevine fanleaf disease will expand this range of adaptation options.

From 2032 onwards, the first regionally distinctive resistant varieties will also enter the National Catalogue.

Each batch is produced under strict health protocols, is fully traceable (origin of grafts, health certificates, batch identifiers) and is distributed through a licensed brand network.
